Hong Kong Lennon Wall

The Hong Kong Lennon Wall is a collection of posters, post it notes, graffiti etc that were prevalent in train stations and underpasses during the early weeks of the 2019 protest. The name Lennon wall comes from the monument of the same name in Prague, Czech Republic. Witnessing the cycle of these Lennon walls getting expanded in different parts of the city and them getting taken down overnight was a very daunting sight – it was a real life visual example of how the voices were getting suppressed during the protest.

Some significant symbols of the protests are

  • The main slogan “five demands, not one less”
  • Yellow Umbrella – yellow for the color of the people (as opposed to red/black for government, and blue for police supporters) and the umbrellas being an iconic defensive tool against tear gas during 2014 protest
  • Shiba dog, pink pig, and Pepe the frog (not pictured) – internet memes and forum logos that became the frontman character for the protest

Me: a story told by her son

Me means mom in Vietnamese. This zine is a biography of the author’s mom from his perspective, as she struggles to cultivate a life in the states as an immigrant. This mostly serves as an act of paying respect to his mother.

This zine is printed exclusively in risograph, and each page uses different variations of gold, blue, florescent orange, florescent pink and yellow. The part that caught my eye the most is the dithering effect used to print the author’s mother’s face, and how the same image is printed across pages of different sizes. The different paper sizes were positioned with careful calibration that the different layers of the face appears as one single image. It gave the impression that her life’s impact and reach was becoming larger and larger with time.

Asian Lunch Box is a paper box that constitutes of five zines, each featuring drawings of popular dishes from different Asian countries – Singapore, Thailand, China, Hong Kong, etc. Different riso colors were used based on the different paper color used, and each zine is a single color print. Along with the food drawings, each page includes the name of the dishes in the local language and Japanese, and a short review from the author. I particularly liked the color combination of each zine booklets, and being able to identify the different dishes that I enjoy.

Hot Damn! Matches

This is a zine in a very creative form of a match box. Inside there are matches that match the risography ink colors used on the box – florescent pink and blue. Although not much explanation was given from the author’s perspective other than the single line description of “Hot! Damn! matches for all of your fiery needs”, this was a very enjoyable form of zine I saw at lucky risograph festival. Each box was folded into its shape with great delicacy, and they contained the same number of pink and blue matches.
