Assignment 2 – painting with words

close up

For the generative poster assignment, I immediately thought an ASCII art inspired technique of expressing an image with a paragraph. The idea of small texts becoming an image was very appealing to me from the beginning because often times I feel uncomfortable with expressing my personal thoughts to a large group, and this ASCII art style made me more comfortable incorporating a message into my work as the texts can be included in a more subtle matter. While I was brainstorming what to talk about, I was able to get a head start on my generative function.

The generative aspect of the poster was that you can choose the image and the any text to express the image in. To create the final graphic from an image and text input, I first resized the image into a smaller image around 100-150 pixels on each side. Then, each pixel was converted to a single character with the character darkness being the pixel darkness. This created a cool effect where if you are standing at a viewing distance far enough, the graphic simply looks like a heavily dithered image, and standing close enough you can read the text that were used to create the image.

With some help from classmates I ultimately chose to work on a roe v wade topic, as it worked especially powerfully with the pop art image of the crying woman. From afar you just see an image of her face, and closer up you can understand why she is crying. Overall this project was a big challenge for it but I am glad how it turned out.
