HW 1: Ladies’ Market 女人街

(by Mikayla Rogers)

For my first assignment, I chose to experiment with using an image I shot on film during my exchange last fall in Hong Kong. I began by creating a green layer for the green color I used, let green = new Riso(“green”). Then, I extracted the green color layer from the photo, saving it as a new image with the extractRGBChannel(img, “green”) function. I then drew this extracted layer onto the first green riso layer. For the text, I used the .cutout() function to cut it out of the green layer. For the alignment and rotating of the text, I spent some time playing around with the x and y-coordinate values to arrange the text in the more visible spots with more consistent light.

Extracting the color layer from the image was a quick process, so I spent most of my time figuring out the layout of my text. The printing process was smooth and quicker than I expected, and it was interesting to analyze the different ink payoffs in each printout. I found that the 7th iteration turned out the best to my liking, and the iterations that followed actually resulted in too much ink payoff, which did not have as much of the noisy, tactile quality that I enjoy.
