For Ding and my Experimental Zine we decided to create a paper fortune teller that tells its users what their Meyers Briggs Personality type is.
At first we worked on prototyping the contents of the paper fortune teller we knew we wanted it to ask 4 basic questions related to the four dichotomies of the “ Meyers Briggs Personality” test. We also knew that we wanted the bottom of the fortune teller to have some sort of different textural quality to it. We played around with the ideas of pop-outs and pullouts but out of simplicity decided to go with a hanging element.
The “ Meyers Briggs Personality” test or MBTI is a test based off four dichotomies, Energy, Lifestyle, Decisions, and Information. A person can very in Energy by either being more introverted or extroverted. Lifestyle= Judging vs Perceiving, Decisions= Thinking or Feeling, and Information= Sensing or Intuition. Our giant paper fortune teller asks its users a question which tells them where they lie on either dichotomy.
The fortune teller is large enough that it is encouraged to be used by two people. This allows you to get to know yourself and your friend, partner, coworker, or stranger better. We hoped to bring back the childhood wonder in getting to know yourself/ a new friend by making an “adult sized” paper fortune teller.
In the back of the zine we included a section that tells you more about your type by giving you mini examples and info cards on each type. The types are put into the personality groups of other types with similar features.
Something I’d want to change in the future is perhaps the type of paper we print on. I found that the ink kept transferring everywhere which is not ideal for a zine that calls for a lot of physical interaction. Something else I’d change in the future is I would change the types of questions we ask and how we frame the responses to make the goal of the zine clearer
Overall I’m very happy with how our design turned out I think it brings a sense of whimsy that I personally have been missing these days. It was a great way to end the course 🙂
